Environmental and Safety Engineering Ford Motor Company is concerned about the safety and environmental effects of the cars and trucks we sell. We recognize that continuing improvements in vehicle safety and reductions in the emissions caused by motor vehicles and in the amount of fuel they consume will benefit both individual vehicle owners and society as a whole. We are committed to making the vehicles we build as safe, clean and economical as possible, while satisfying consumer needs and expectations.
Environmental and Safety Engineering (E&SE) has global oversight responsibility for environmental and safety matters affecting production vehicles and related products, and for environmental matters affecting manufacturing, real estate and financial services operations. We are responsible for monitoring and evaluating current and emerging environmental and safety issues, technical developments and governmental activity and for reporting to management and recommending appropriate action.
We provide technical and regulatory expertise related to product safety, emissions, fuel economy, facility environmental matters, and vehicle recycling. For all related matters, we are the external customer interface, establish regulatory forecasts, recommend corporate policy, and (with pertinent product and manufacturing operations) assure regulatory compliance of Ford products and facilities worldwide.
E&SE includes three offices: the Automotive Safety Office (ASO), Environmental Quality Office (EQO) and Vehicle Environmental Engineering (VEE).

Vehicle Environmental Engineering VEE is responsible for ensuring that our automotive products meet or exceed the environmental regulations of all of the countries in which we do business around the world. The members of VEE not only oversee vehicle emissions testing and certification, but they also actively contribute technical advice to government agencies regarding rulemaking and environmental proposals. VEE also interacts directly with the public on emissions and fuel economy issues and is actively involved in both formulating and implementing environmental initiatives in the company.
VEE's mission is twofold. First, VEE ensures that our vehicles meet all government emissions and fuel economy standards and regulations throughout the world. In addition, VEE communicates with government representatives and others who are concerned with emission fuel economy and vehicle recycling.
Governments throughout the world have recognized the need to limit pollution generated by auto emissions and have passed laws requiring vehicle manufacturers to certify that their products meet specified emissions levels. In addition, Ford's vehicle fleet must meet or exceed legally stipulated fuel economy standards. VEE: - coordinates the testing and documentation process used to certify these vehicles
- designs and evaluates new technologies to accurately measure emissions
- helps development and manufacturing engineers produce certified vehicles that meet Ford's standards for good drive quality, reliability, performance and ease of maintenance at a reasonable cost
- represents Ford Motor Company after vehicles are sold
- helps car and truck owners resolve emissions-related warranty concerns and oversees emissions testing of customers' vehicles
- communicates with government representatives, representatives of private organizations, and individuals concerned with emissions, fuel economy and vehicle recycling
- conducts research and prepares official Ford Motor Company statements about environmental issues

E&SE Career Programs Each year our three offices may seek summer interns.
We may also seek college graduates for the Ford College Graduate program, with degrees generally in Chemical, Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. Our FCG program is designed to give new Ford engineers a broad base of experience in their first two years with the company. Rotations involve various assignments inside and outside of E&SE before you settle in your permanent position. Each FCG works with a management level mentor to develop a customized rotation plan. In addition, training programs and a variety of other career development enablers are in place to support you in your first two years with the company.
Research Lab Ford Research Lab covers a broad range of advanced research areas, with subjects in the physical and applied sciences, computer science and artificial intelligence, and applied mathematics. From new materials development, to leading edge safety research and development including crash avoidance, to neural network research with partners like NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), we are expanding the frontiers of science.
Practical results of our research improve paint durability while reducing the environmental impact of paint processes; they improve vehicle designs through proprietary computer simulations; and they support automotive scientists and policy-makers in emerging markets like China and India. Laboratories for Chemical and Physical Science, International Systems Research, Manufacturing and Vehicle Design, and Powertrain and Vehicle Research have been joined by the Ford Forschungszentrum Aachen Laboratory in Germany to deliver new technology and processes to meet the needs of Ford in Europe.
Our two-year college graduate program for new hires allows you to contribute to more than one ongoing research project while you develop a program of your own, to begin after your initial two-year period. Along with your mentor, you'll pursue your ideas from initial technical concepts to eventual implementation into the business. College graduate opportunities exist in each of our four laboratories:- Powertrain and Vehicle Research
- Manufacturing and Vehicle Design Research
- Chemical and Physical Sciences
- International and Systems Research
Desired Background We seek candidates with a Ph.D. or master's degree in one of these areas: Physics, Mathematics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Computer Engineering. Some opportunities are available for candidates with bachelor's or master's degrees.
